Q. My sister owns a new 2100 sq ft townhome in UT and she was asking me how much it would cost to finish her 700 sq ft basement. I said I had no idea since I live in CA. I told her to contact her local contractors, but she says she doesn't trust any of them since they probably over charge anyways. She's contacted about 3 and they all have their prices around $20k - 22K. She believes she can get it for less. A. I just checked with the data that ServiceMagic keeps on the projects they help homeowners with. This data is not specific to Provo, but only the Salt Lake/Ogden area. For this project, it looks like the average basement remodel in that area costs $18,500. Their nationwide average shows this to be $20,680. A little caveat is that this data doesn't show how big the basements were or the scope of the remodel. But I think these figures should help get your sister in the ballpark, which it looks like the contractors she's talked to are in that range. Her basement seems smaller than average, and as along as she isn't looking for top of the line on all of the materials and such, I think it could likely be done for cheaper, maybe in the $13-15k range. 1.20 What is the best place to buy basement remodeling materials?

Q. I am in the planning phase of finishing our basement, and wondered where the best place was to buy materials and supplies. I'm asking more about drywall, lumber, screws, etc. since this will be the most expensive part of the first phase. Are the Big Box stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) the most cost effective choice, or is there a more cost effective alternative? The first poster brought up an interesting point. I'm located in the Kansas City area, so local options would be the best solution.

A. If your material costs are over $1,500 go to Home Depot contractor desk. Tell them you would like pricing form "the bid room". When you give them a material list, they run their regular pricings and then cut At least 8% off, and more if the order is substantial. Take a material list to multiple stores and get quotes. They are free. Then compare pricings line by line, and you can save some money by getting material from multiple sources. Hope this helps

My tip/idea: You know, the easiest thing you can do is to call home remodelers in your area--or instead of calling, use the link below--and get Free estimates from them as to the cost involved in refinishing the basement. (Home remodelers usually do all trades in general related to your basement, etc.) This is the only true way of assessing the cost involved, as the cost of material and labor greatly varies by location; so what one person says on here does not get you any closer to understanding what costs are involved in this project without the use of local contractor estimates. A. As an x employee I can tell you the Owens Corning system is intentionally over priced so the independent sales people can make money. You can get the system for 38% off list if you hold out until they recontact you after showing the sales person the door. However if you don't have any water issues which cause mold and mildew there are alternatives available.

A. Sorry. You are one of those conspiracy people. Too bad. I will answer your question. Controlled demolition experts do not use fuel air fires to demolish buildings because there are way too many variables, and the results are too unpredictable. Would not do to have the wrong part of the building burn a little more quickly then expected, and have the building collapse to the left or right instead of straight down. And.... Thanks for adding that additional information. I thought you were just some conspiracy theorist. Now, I know that you think you are a scientist. As an engineering professor with a PHd that teaches material sciences for a living, you should know exactly how concrete will react when it is put under extreme pressure. You should also know all about cavity radiation, all about the way that materials react in heat, how long it takes them to absorb and radiate heat in the conditions that were present following the collapse of WTC 1, 2, and 7. And, by the way. Your eyesight must be outstanding to be able to tell that there is molten steel flowing out of the buildings in the news and amateur videos. Please explain to all of us exactly how you could tell that grainy pixellated video that was digitally blown up beyond recognition showed molten steel? Using your extensive background in material sciences, please tell us all what characteristics were demonstrated on that video that conclusively proved that there was molten steel flowing in the buildings?

1.00 Why would running a gas line from the meter to a gas fireplace cost $365?

Q. I got a fireplace installation estimate. One of the items was running gas line to the fireplace. The gas is about 30 feet from the fireplace with the gas meter inside the basement and the fireplace on the next floor. The ceiling is partially open like an unfinished basement for 15 feet and then a drop ceiling on the finished part for the last 15 feet. A possibly tricky part would be drilling a hole through a brick wall where the fireplace goes in a wood frame room addition added on to a brick house. I know I need a person who is certified to work on gas lines for safety reasons but this one part of the bid seems high and this is ONLY for the gas line installation, not anything else as those things are listed separately (and by the way are also high). This guy is the only dealer of the brand I want in my area and if you don't buy locally they aren't obligated to service your fireplace. Who else is qualified to install gas line?

A. Thats actually a pretty good price. You have to consider, ESPECIALLY, with installation of a gas line, the liability they are taking on doing the work. Not to mention the cost of materials, permits, inspections, and overhead to run the business. You are much better off to pay a little more now than to look for a cheap altenative. If any thing goes wrong who would you rather blame? Yourself for saving a few bucks or the guys with the insurance? Think wisely here!!!

1.00 Hvac service techs, furnace and hot water tank not working after 2 wks of steady rain?

Q. A customer called and said after alot of rain the furnace and the hot water tank don't work. The board on the furnace indicates pressure switch problem but I haven't tested anything yet. I don't know if the basement actually flooded or not but I don't think so. Any ideas?
